2015 Christmas Newsletter

Ho Ho Ho! Christmas Greetings from all at Star Scope!

StarscopeWe hope this reaches you all feeling happy, healthy and festive. For those of you who receive our annual

Christmas gift tokens, we hope you will be able to choose yourselves an appropriate gift with our very best wishes.

It has been a very busy year, with the highlight being our 60 th Birthday celebrations in June. We were delighted that so many faces, old and new, were able to join us for our celebratory lunch, along with the Mayor of St Albans, the Deputy Mayor of Harpenden, and a representative of the Bishop of St Albans. Everyone agreed it was a very special occasion, and it is a major achievement for any small support group to ‘survive’ so long.

Thanks to everyone who has helped and supported us over so many years.

We are breaking with tradition this year, and planning to have our Children’s Party at Easter instead of January! Invitations will follow in the New Year, so please watch this space!

The committee are always keen to welcome new members and help, particularly at busy times of the year. We are asking for volunteers to ‘save the date’ of Saturday July 2 nd to kindly help us with a fundraising collection at Sainsbury’s in London Colney. This is a rare opportunity for us, as permission to collect is very restricted, so we hope that as many supporters as possible will be able to help us boost our annual fundraising on this day! We have our other usual 2 collections in Harpenden and Marshalswick planned too, but find fundraising increasingly difficult throughout the year, so this could make a real difference.

In the New Year we plan to review our spending on our grant allocations and Christmas gifts, to ensure that we are putting our limited funds to the best possible use. We welcome any feedback, and any fundraising suggestions would always be greatly appreciated! We currently award grants from the General Fund for pieces of equipment or special items needed to make life easier, and we still have some money left in Anne Pearce’s Fund for particular ‘Leisure and Pleasure’ activities, on a one-off basis, up to £500. Application forms are available via our website or via one of the committee so please don’t hesitate to ask.

The committee would like to thank Sarah Phelan, one of our members who has worked very hard to try and set up a regular family swimming session for Star Scope families. The first session took place in the October half term holiday, and further sessions are hoped for in the school holidays. If you are interested in joining Sarah for these sessions, please let her know! (sarahphelan@hotmail.com) Likewise, if anyone has any ideas for new initiatives or activities that Star Scope may be able to help with, please get in touch.

We will continue to hold regular coffee mornings throughout the year, and the first is planned for Friday January 15 th 2016 at Jan Shepheard’s house, 5 Townsend Drive, St Albans, AL3 5RB. All welcome, from 10.30am. (Please RSVP to jan@shepheard.co.uk or 01727 866218)

We wish everyone a very safe, healthy and Happy Christmas and New Year!

Best wishes, Jan Shepheard and the rest of the Committee
